Subject Verb Agreement

영어에서는 말하는 사람과 그 사람의 동작을 나타내는 말(동사 Verb)의 짝이 맞아야 합니다. 한국말은 꼭 그래야 하지 않죠. 그래서 많이 혼동된답니다.
특별히 3인칭 단수일 경우에 말입니다. 3인칭이란 ‘나와 너(I and You)’를 뺀 나머지를 말하구요, 단수란 말은 그대도 혼자인 경우이죠. 영어로는 3rd Person Singular 이라고 합니다.
주어는 Subject라고 많이 알고 있죠. 그런데 좀 쉽게 Naming Part라고 생각해봅시다.
Naming Part는 어떤 사람이나 어떤 것을 나타내는 말이라는 뜻이죠.
Naming Part가 I, You, We, They 그리고 복수형태의 명사를 제외한 것은 3rd Person Singular라고 생각하시면 됩니다.
① is / isn’t
② Does(물어볼 때 )
③ Doesn’t(물어볼 때나 부정 할때)
④ 일반동사에 ?s, -es, 를 붙인 형태가 대표적입니다.
아래 본문에 빨간색으로 표시된 부분들이 이러한 경우에 해당합니다. 특별히 읽을 때 일반동사 뒤에 있는 ?s 발음을 유의해서 내도록 해야합니다.

/ 표시는 의미나 호흡이 끊기는 자리입니다. 읽거나 말하는 것은 단순한 행위가 아니라 의미를 파악하는 것입니다. 읽기나 말하기를 할 때 한 Unit을 한 덩어리로 여기고 연습하세요. 만약에 암기를 원하시는 경우에는 더더욱 Unit이 도움이 될 것입니다.

¹ Blessed is the one / who obeys the law of the Lord.
He doesn’t follow the advice / of evil people.
He doesn’t make a habit /of doing what sinners do.
He doesn’t join those / who make fun of the Lord and his law.
² Instead, he takes delight / in the law of the Lord.
He thinks about his law / day and night.
³ He is like a tree / that is planted near a stream of water.
It always bears its fruit / at the right time.
Its leaves don’t dry up.
Everything godly people do / turns out well.
⁴ Sinful people are not like that at all.
They are like straw / that the wind blows away.
⁵ When the Lord judges them, / their life will come to an end.
Sinners won’t have any place / among those who are godly.
⁶ The Lord watches over the lives / of those who are godly.
But the lives of sinful people / will lead to their death.

Everything godly people do turns out well.(3절)
everything 이 단수인가요? 네 그렇습니다. every- 가 붙는 말은 단수로 쓰인답니다.
‘하나님의 사람들이 하는 모든 일’ 인데도 단수로 간주했죠.

¹ Why do the nations plan evil together?
Why do they make useless plans?
² The kings of the earth take their stand against the Lord.
The rulers of the earth gather together against his anointed king.
³ “Let us break free from their chains,” they say.” Let us throw off their ropes.”
⁴ The One who sits on his throne in heaven laughs.
The Lord makes fun of those rules and their plans.
⁵ When he is angry, he warns them.
When his anger blaze out, he terrifies them.
⁶ He says to them, “I have placed my king on my holy mountain of Zion.”
⁷ I will announce what the Lord Has promised.
He said to me, “You are my son.
Today I have become your father.
⁸ Ask me, and I will give the nations to you.
All nations on earth will belong to you.
⁹ You will break them to pieces like clay pots.”
¹⁰ Kings, be wise!
Rulers of the earth, be warned!
¹¹ Serve him with joy and trembling.
¹² Obey the son completely, or he will be angry.
Your way of life will lead to your death. His anger can blaze out at any moment.
Blessed are all those who go to him for safety.
